Jardine Crescent Transformation Complete

From Site Visit to Completed Homes

Earlier this year, CHIC visited Jardine Crescent in Coventry while refurbishment works were underway, seeing first hand the collaboration taking place to deliver a complex retrofit programme for residents.

Recently, CHIC was invited back to celebrate the completion of the project and see the transformation of the four residential blocks. The completed scheme demonstrates how effective collaboration through the CHIC Healthy Homes Framework can deliver lasting improvements for residents while preserving the heritage of an important local landmark.

Creating Warmer, More Comfortable Homes

The £2.1 million refurbishment has transformed 40 occupied maisonettes, improving energy efficiency and security for residents.

Works included:

  • New insulated roofing systems
  • Modern double glazed windows and doors
  • An insulated curtain wall façade
  • Improved ventilation throughout each home
  • External insulation to key structural elements
  • New communal skylights to brighten shared spaces

Together, these improvements have created homes that are warmer in winter and cooler during periods of hot weather, while being more efficient to heat. The refurbishment has also improved air circulation throughout the properties, helping to reduce the risk of damp and mould.

The completed works have increased every property’s Energy Performance Certificate to a minimum C rating, supporting lower energy consumption and reducing household running costs.

Collaboration That Delivered More

The project brought together social landlord Citizen, specialist consultants and delivery partners Equans, allowing works to be carefully coordinated across occupied homes.

Close collaboration meant multiple improvement programmes, including heating upgrades and essential gas network works, could be completed alongside the external refurbishment. By coordinating these activities, disruption to residents was minimised while avoiding the need for additional intrusive works in the future.

The project also required careful planning due to the location of the homes above a busy shopping centre. Throughout construction, businesses remained open and residents continued living in their homes, with partners working together to maintain clear communication and minimise disruption.

Delivering Wider Community Benefits

Alongside improvements to residents’ homes, the project generated significant wider benefits for the local community.

Social value was delivered throughout the programme through local volunteering initiatives, environmental improvement activities and employment opportunities. Community spaces surrounding the development were enhanced, helping create a cleaner and more welcoming environment for residents and neighbouring businesses.

Partnership in Action

The completion of Jardine Crescent demonstrates the value of collaborative procurement in delivering high quality retrofit projects.

Through the CHIC Healthy Homes Framework, Citizen was able to bring together the expertise needed to deliver a technically complex refurbishment while maintaining occupied homes, protecting a significant heritage asset and improving the lives of residents.

The project highlights how partnership working can deliver more than physical improvements to buildings. By combining technical expertise, coordinated planning and a shared focus on residents, the refurbishment has created warmer, healthier homes while generating lasting benefits for the wider community.
