Challenge: Resolving Delivery Issues and Improving Reliability
Connexus, a founding CHIC member, was experiencing persistent problems with their incumbent kitchen supplier. Deliveries frequently arrived with missing or damaged items, leading to delays and frustration for both staff and residents. Despite CHIC working closely with Connexus to help resolve these issues, the supplier failed to make meaningful improvements. Given the need for a reliable and consistent service for a contract valued at approximately £1 million per annum, Connexus sought a new supplier through CHIC’s support.


Solution & Route to Market
In October 2019, Connexus chose to utilise CHIC’s newly launched Kitchen Supply Framework. This provided access to an actively managed panel of pre qualified suppliers and competitive, market reflective pricing. A structured and transparent procurement process was initiated to ensure the selection of a supplier which could meet Connexus’ service and quality expectations whilst delivering value for money.
How CHIC Helped
To support the selection process, CHIC organised a supplier engagement day. All framework suppliers were invited to exhibit kitchens based on two specified price bands, with components restricted to a consistent list to ensure fairness. Staff from Connexus’ Housing and Repairs Teams, along with a Resident Panel, assessed each kitchen against a range of qualitative measures.
Each supplier gave a short presentation covering their mobilisation approach and delivery model. This was followed by a structured Q&A session led by Connexus. The combined scores from the product assessments and presentations were added to the framework tender evaluations to determine the final outcome.
The supplier day proved to be a highly successful and valuable part of the process. It gave Connexus staff and residents the opportunity to assess products first hand, rather than relying solely on written submissions or specifications. This hands on approach encouraged meaningful engagement, allowed real time comparison of quality and functionality and gave confidence in the supplier’s ability to deliver. Bringing together operational teams, end users and decision makers helped ensure that the final selection met practical needs as well as procurement criteria.
Magnet Contract Kitchens was appointed as the successful supplier and went on to deliver kitchen units to Connexus for three years, providing a significantly improved services.
